FAQ

How do I get started?

You are more than welcome to just turn up to one of our training sessions. However, it is appreciated (but not essential) if you drop a message just so we can provide sufficient coaching, particularly if it's your first judo session.

What do I wear?

We have a range of uniforms you can borrow while you try out the classes.

At what age should I start my child in Judo?

We have a range of ages at Mercia from children aged 5 to seasoned veterans. We welcome all ages and also encourage adults to start and learn a new sport.

How do the gradings work?

During the year, our coaches will arrange two grading opportunities where individuals can demonstrate what they have learnt and understood. The gradings are based on a set of competencies to a national framework.

I have never done any Martial Arts or judo before. Do you have a beginner’s class?

Yes! Beginners are most welcome. Our sessions covers basic throwing actions, submission techniques and ground fighting. Special emphasis is placed on the skill of falling safely. There are no egos at Mercia Judo Club. You will be partnered with people appropriately. Where possible, we will place beginners in either small groups or 1-1 with a coach to learn the fundamental skills.

Do I have to be physically fit to take part?

Absolutely not! You will get into shape as you train and participate in classes, progressing through the ranking system which in turn will enable you to perform the judo techniques, we have Judoka of all ages, sizes and abilities.

What is the difference between Judo and other martial arts?

Judo is a sport derived from Japanese martial arts. It focuses on physical fitness based upon a strong moral code and code of conduct. While there are many different martial arts to choose from, Judo is widely viewed as the best choice for self-defence. Because Judo focuses on using the opponent's momentum to throw them off balance, it is an incredibly effective form of self-defence, as even a much larger opponent can be taken down with relative ease. Judo is also a extremely versatile martial art, it can be used for both sport and self-defence. As a result, Judo in MMA is vastly becoming a known and practised strategy. In addition, Judo is incredibly accessible, as it doesn't require expensive equipment or special facilities. As a result, Judo is the perfect martial art for anyone looking to improve their self-defence skills.
